8/28/2018 0 Comments Summer BooksLet's just go ahead and call this one summer books because I have not kept up monthly (or even bi-monthly)! Okay so lets do this:
1. in a dark, dark wood - This book was about a bachelorette party or a "hen" party. The book opens in a hospital room where the main character cannot remember what happened but knows it was bad. I really enjoyed this one and I can picture it becoming a film, and Reese bought the rights! 2. Sharp Objects - This was on my must read list because of the upcoming HBO Series. Okay so I loved the book but have only watched one episode of the series so far. My plan is to do what I did with Little Big Lies, watch a bunch on a Sunday like a big movie. 3. Something in the Water - As soon as Reese posted this as her book of the month I ordered it (if Reese says read, I read). I really enjoyed this. The main character was relatable and really did have you thinking, what would I do in that situation. It had some great twists and turns that truthfully I did not see coming! 4. All the Ugly and Wonderful Things - Okay, so I have mixed emotions about this book. It is about a girl who's parents are drug dealers and do not take very good care of her. One of her fathers "guys" starts to take care of her and her brother, but they develop a deeper bond. I guess when I originally ordered this book I was picturing the girl to be like 12 or 13 when the book began but she was about 6 or 7 (I read it awhile ago). I was so into this book and invested in the ending but again was not sure how I felt about the whole situation. I did a lot of Googling about the book and plot after I finished it and found a lot of similar stories and it was really eye opening. 5. #Girlboss - I kept seeing this book on must read for business women in their 20's. It looked like an interesting one, some (most) business books can be dry. This one was relatable and it was fun to see her get into business right when ebay was launching. I still need to check out the Netflix series. 6. Are you Sleeping? - As soon as I read the first sentence that described this book I was in! It said it was a combination of the podcast Serial and in a dark, dark wood. This is another one that Reese bought the rights to and I think it will be a tv series for Apple. This book is about the behind the scenes of a podcast and the people who's lives it interrupts. The podcast is investigating a old murder and the book point of view is of the daughter of the guy who was murdered. She all of a sudden finds out about the podcast and it turns her life upside down. 7. When Life Gives you Lululemons - This might have been my least favorite book of the summer. I saw it all over social media and it does have a catchy title. I figured I would give it a try, I like the Devil Wears Prada movie (I have never read the book). Im not sure if I was just a little bit out of the target age range for this book, the three main characters were in their 30's. But I have never had a hard time relating to characters who were older than me. I think this book was just trying to hard with brand names and celebrities. 8. Next Year in Havana - I really like this book. As you can most likely tell based on the title, this book is set in Cuba. It is about a women visiting Cuba who's grandmother lived there but left as a teenager. What I liked most was that it switched POV between the grandmother (as a teenager) and the granddaughter. We got to see what current Cuba was like, as well as what Cuba was like back when the grandmother lived there. 9. The Good Girl - I read this book in about a day and a half. You really want to know what happens. It is about a kidnapping, and switches POV in each chapter. It switches between the parents of the kidnapped girl (she's in her 20's), the kidnapped girl, the kidnapper and the cop covering the case. It also switches between present day (which is post getting the girl home) and the past (during the kidnapping). With all those factors combined you really just want to know what happened. 10. Dark Places - Another Gillian Flynn book. I liked this one better than Sharp Objects. A Kill Club is fascinated in a murder that happened about 20 years ago. A family was murdered and the older brother went to jail for it. Only one member of the family who was in the house that night lived and she was 7 at the time. So in present day the Kill Club reaches out her for information because they don't fully believe that her brother did it. She finds herself figuring out some things she might not have wanted. 11. Crazy Rich Asians - I have seen this book around for awhile and honestly never thought about it. Then I saw the movie preview and was like okay wow that looks good. So obviously I went ahead and bought the book. I think this says enough about whether I liked it or not, I bought the next two books in the series before even finishing this one. Now I just have to get around to seeing the movie, from what I have heard from people who have seen it they loved it.
